Jobs / Antares Nuclear

Senior Radiation Shielding Engineer

Los Angeles, California, US; Idaho Falls, Idaho, US · $160,000–$235,000 a year

Role

Antares is hiring a Senior Radiation Shielding Engineer to serve as responsible engineer for radiation source characterization and shielding design on its microreactor. The work covers reactor operation and shutdown as well as post-operation transportation, storage and disposition, and is done with the reactor and site design team.

Responsibilities: Own radiation shielding design and analysis, using neutronics simulations to characterize radiation sources from fission, activation and decay during operation and in post-operation configurations. Develop trade studies of shielding materials and optimize shielding for deployment and post-operation transport across different customer deployment scenarios. Support regulatory compliance strategies and licensing pathways, and keep tools and analyses maintained under the company's quality assurance program.

Requirements: A bachelor's degree in nuclear or mechanical engineering, physics, materials science or a related field, plus four or more years of radiation shielding analysis and design experience. Candidates must be proficient in modern shielding analysis tools such as MCNP/ADVANTG, SCALE/MAVRIC or similar Monte Carlo variance-reduction tools, and able to work across regulatory requirements, shielding design features, analysis tools and manufacturing methods.

Preferred experience: A master's degree or PhD in nuclear engineering, broad knowledge of nuclear interactions with shielding materials, project management and cross-disciplinary communication skills, and working knowledge of a programming language, preferably Python.

Working arrangements: The posting lists Los Angeles and Idaho Falls. The company's Los Angeles-area facility is in Torrance, California. The role requires long hours and weekends when critical milestones demand them, and travel to regulatory locations as needed. Under U.S. export regulations (ITAR), applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees or asylees, or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.
