Role
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a Diagnostician to help carry SPARC tokamak diagnostics from back-end design through fabrication, assembly, commissioning and use. The team covers about 40 subsystems, from magnetics and interferometry to Thomson scattering, bolometry and neutron measurements, and is adding a generalist with experience across several diagnostics. The employer welcomes senior and early-career fusion scientists as well as career changers from other industries.
Responsibilities: Shepherd diagnostic subsystems through final design with scientists, designers, analysts and engineers. Develop assembly, installation, calibration and commissioning plans that support first plasma on schedule. Integrate diagnostics into plant-level and real-time plasma control systems, help test and operate them, and collaborate with MIT-PSFC and other academic partners.
Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field such as mechanical, aerospace, civil or nuclear engineering. Candidates must have taken part in designing a new or upgraded scientific instrument comparable in scale and complexity to those used in magnetic-confinement fusion, and must show examples of using instruments to support an operational or research mission. Also required are data-analysis or lab-automation software skills in Python, Matlab, C++ or an equivalent, hands-on skills relevant to these diagnostics such as vacuum systems, lasers or calibration sources, and the ability to work through trade-offs between engineering and physics.
Preferred experience: Designing and implementing a plasma diagnostic for a university-scale or larger magnetic-confinement fusion experiment.
Working arrangements: The work involves occasional lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing and extended standing or sitting, plus occasional travel and occasional night, weekend or on-call work. The facility contains industrial hazards including strong magnets, lead, high voltage, pressure systems and cryogenics. Any offer depends on compliance with U.S. export-control laws.
