Role
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a Lead Assembly Technician to organize small technician teams building the SPARC tokamak. The work covers handling, aligning and integrating large electromagnetic coils, vacuum vessels, instrumentation, support structures, tooling, diagnostics and superconducting cable bundles into a tightly packed central device.
Responsibilities: Manage daily work orders against the schedule, assign technicians, and lead morning briefs, shift hand-offs and safety discussions. Review mechanical, welding, electrical and lifting work orders, take part in major component lifts and movements, and give visual inspection buy-off on completed tasks. Coordinate with engineers, metrology, quality, assembly testing and outside crews, troubleshoot problems, and flag needed non-conformance reports to engineers.
Requirements: A high school diploma or equivalent experience, plus at least seven years in a highly technical assembly role in fields such as aerospace, semiconductors, oil and gas, power plants, wind or racing and automotive. Candidates need two to three years overseeing a team of five or more, end-to-end large-scale project experience, experience assisting lifting operations, knowledge of joining and integration methods such as bolted flanges, welding and epoxies, and strong safety awareness.
Preferred experience: Ten or more years in technical assembly, three or more years leading ten or more people, forklift and basic lathe or mill use, tooling design, JIRA or Manufacturo, rigging and heavy-lift oversight, vacuum, clean room and cryogenic systems, and precision alignment.
Working arrangements: Hours are 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, with possible overtime and occasional travel, night, weekend or on-call work. The job involves occasional lifting up to 50 lbs, confined spaces and platforms around 25 feet high, with hazards including strong magnets, high voltage and cryogenics. Any offer depends on compliance with U.S. export-control laws.
