Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

Devens, Massachusetts, US · $90,000–$145,000 a year

Role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets to own cable magnet hardware for SPARC, ARC or other projects from early concept to delivery. The engineer develops and analyses designs, writes the specifications needed to manufacture and install the hardware, and supports production and assembly teams through build and installation.

Responsibilities: Create and iterate design concepts for metallic and composite parts, with thermal, structural and electromagnetic analysis. Support procurement in preparing and executing manufacturing contracts, and work with R&D, analysis, manufacturing and procurement teams to meet program milestones. Diagnose issues on the production and assembly line, propose root-cause design fixes, and prepare the reports that document and validate final cable magnet systems.

Requirements: A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or another relevant field. At least five years of engineering design and analysis experience, including at least two years supporting production hardware by resolving technical issues and implementing design-for-manufacturing or assembly changes. Candidates also need hands-on experience with parts designed for high loads or extreme environments, strong fundamentals in static structures and heat transfer, and familiarity with the full design process. CAD proficiency is required (NX preferred, any tool acceptable), as is FEA (ANSYS and COMSOL preferred).

Preferred experience: Mechanical components far beyond desktop scale, such as megawatt power, ton-scale mass or meganewton forces; ASME Y14 GD&T; production or heavy-equipment assembly; and design work involving electromagnets, vacuum systems, welding, composites, radiation or cryogenic environments.

Working arrangements: The role includes occasional travel and occasional night, weekend or on-call work, in a facility with industrial hazards including strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems and cryogenics. Any offer depends on compliance with U.S. export-control laws.
