Role
General Matter is hiring a Lead, Nuclear Criticality Safety to build and lead the criticality safety program for its enrichment facility, which is to be licensed as a 10 CFR Part 70 fuel cycle facility. The lead's evaluations are a foundational input to the facility's Integrated Safety Analysis.
Responsibilities: Set methodology, double-contingency strategy and technical direction. Write and maintain criticality safety evaluations for fissile-material processes and carry their results into the Integrated Safety Analysis. Run analyses with codes such as SCALE or MCNP, act as the main criticality safety contact during NRC licensing, amendments and inspections, and mentor other engineers. It also covers audits, training and incident investigations.
Requirements: A bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, physics or a related field and at least eight years of nuclear criticality safety experience, including direct authorship of criticality safety evaluations at a DOE or NRC-licensed facility. Candidates need strong knowledge of 10 CFR Part 70 and the ANSI/ANS-8 standards, the ability to bridge DOE and NRC frameworks where they differ, proficiency with SCALE, MCNP or similar tools, strong communication skills and evidence of exceptional ability.
Preferred experience: Standing up or significantly revising a criticality safety program at an NRC-licensed Part 70 facility. DOE weapons complex or national laboratory experience, such as Y-12, Savannah River, Los Alamos, Pantex or Idaho National Laboratory, applied to NRC licensing. Criticality safety engineer certification such as ANSI/ANS-8.24, a PE licence or the ability to obtain one, and an advanced degree.
Working arrangements: The application describes the job as in-person at the Los Angeles office and asks whether candidates will relocate and commute daily. It states that the job requires access to export-controlled information, generally limited to US persons, and a US Q security clearance, which requires US citizenship. Extended hours and weekends may be required.
