Radiation Safety Officer / Radiation Protection Manager

Los Angeles, California, US; Paducah, Kentucky, US · $150,000–$210,000 a year

Role

General Matter is hiring a Radiation Safety Officer / Radiation Protection Manager to lead radiation protection for its uranium hexafluoride (UF6) operations as it scales enrichment in the US. The role establishes the radiation protection program end to end and serves as the site authority on radiation safety.

Responsibilities: Write procedures for UF6 handling and enrichment and ensure compliance with NRC and DOE requirements such as 10 CFR Part 20 and applicable ICRP and ANSI standards. Run ALARA, monitoring, dosimetry and radiological controls, and evaluate instrumentation. The manager advises operations, engineering and leadership, supports licensing interactions, delivers training, and builds the team as operations grow.

Requirements: A bachelor's or advanced degree in science, engineering, health physics, radiation protection or a closely related field, and at least eight years in radiation protection, health physics or a related field. Candidates need prior experience as an RSO or radiation protection program manager at an NRC-licensed facility, DOE site, national laboratory or comparable regulated nuclear environment, and relevant credentials such as NRRPT or CHP. Direct uranium (UF6/UO2) processing experience is required, or equivalent experience with other highly radioactive or hazardous materials in a regulated setting. Candidates must be able to translate radiation data and regulations into practical procedures and obtain the required clearance and access authorization.

Preferred experience: Evidence of exceptional ability, experience standing up or significantly expanding a radiation protection program in a fast-paced or startup setting, and an advanced degree in health physics or radiation science.

Working arrangements: The application describes the job as in-person at the stated offices and asks whether candidates will relocate and commute daily. It states that the job requires access to export-controlled information, generally limited to US persons, and a US Q security clearance, which requires US citizenship. Extended hours and weekends may be required.
