Jobs / Helion

Power Electronics Engineer

Everett, Washington, US · $165,000–$200,000 a year

Role

Helion is hiring a Power Electronics Engineer to design, build and commission the circuits that store, switch and recover energy in its pulsed-magnetic fusion machines. Engineers take designs from concept through bring-up, commissioning and operation, and Helion states that it grows strong power electronics engineers into high-voltage and pulsed-power work.

Responsibilities: Depending on background and level, the work spans one or more of three areas. Controls and protection covers low-voltage electronics such as EtherCAT-networked control boards, synchronized switch triggering, high-speed diagnostics inside a high-voltage environment and fault protection for a multi-megajoule system. High voltage and pulsed power covers capacitor banks, thyristor and solid-state switching, triggering and protection at kilovolt and kiloampere scale with sub-millisecond pulses, plus component characterization. Power electronics design covers high-efficiency converters, chargers and energy-recovery circuits, including device selection, magnetics and thermal design.

Requirements: A degree in electrical engineering or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience. Demonstrated experience designing and building power electronics or power-conversion hardware from schematic through board bring-up, debug and test, with expected independence scaling by level. A solid grounding in switching topologies, IGBT, MOSFET and thyristor selection, gate drive, magnetics, thermal design and loss analysis; PCBA design and circuit simulation in tools such as Altium, KiCad, SIMetrix, PLECS or LTspice, or equivalents; strong bench debugging skills; and comfort across the hardware-firmware boundary.

Preferred experience: Familiarity with EtherCAT and with FPGA or embedded monitoring is an asset. High-voltage or pulsed-power experience is welcome but not required.

Working arrangements: The role is onsite in Everett, Washington. The application states that the position requires compliance with U.S. export-control laws and asks about U.S.-person status, U.S. work eligibility and sponsorship needs.
