Jobs / Kairos Power

Senior Engineer, Reactor Vessel

Alameda, California, US · $140,600–$165,400 (Alameda, CA onsite range)

Role

Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world's transition to clean energy through commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR), designed for robust safety, affordable cost, and flexible operation alongside variable renewables. The Reactor Vessel System team within the Reactor Systems department is seeking a highly motivated Senior Engineer reporting to the Head of Reactor Systems to work directly on reactor vessel shell, penetrations, supports, closures, structural interfaces, and related mechanical components for a first-of-a-kind FHR.

Responsibilities include owning and managing design scope for reactor vessel components, interfaces, and hardware packages; developing requirements, design bases, interface definitions, and verification plans; leading mechanical design and technical execution; coordinating with mechanical, civil, I&C, safety analysis, manufacturing, and plant integration teams on spatial, thermal, structural, and functional interfaces; leading or supporting design integration reviews; preparing and reviewing drawings, design reports, test plans, specifications, calculations, thermal and structural analyses, pressure-boundary evaluations, and FMEAs; assessing compliance with ASME, ANSI, ASTM, and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code standards; supporting fabrication, inspection, installation, testing, and maintenance with suppliers and operations teams; maintaining configuration-managed design records; and providing technical estimates, risk inputs, and mentoring to junior engineers.

Qualifications require a bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, Materials, Structural, or a related engineering discipline, plus 8 or more years of relevant experience in mechanical design, nuclear component design, pressure vessel design, high-temperature systems, or complex hardware development, including independently leading design, analysis, fabrication support, testing, or qualification of pressure or reactor vessels. Familiarity with ASME BPVC Section III/VIII, NQA-1 or ISO 9001 quality programs, GD&T, welding, and large metallic component fabrication is desired. The role is onsite in Alameda, California with up to 20% travel to Kairos sites, suppliers, and test facilities, occasional schedule flexibility, and work in a DOE 10 CFR Part 810 export-controlled facility requiring DOE authorization (foreign nationals of non-generally-authorized countries require a company export license).
