Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer focused on Remote Handling Special Components with expertise in modular hardware design for remotely operated systems. The role is centered on design, physical integration, and demonstration of remote handling technologies through 1:1 scale mockups and prototype builds that validate interfaces, clearances, tolerances, and handling sequences, systematically derisking reactor maintenance strategies prior to deployment while integrating remote-handling requirements into component architecture for assembly, maintenance, inspection, and long-term operability.
Responsibilities span modular maintenance system development (lifecycle design for maintainability, inspectability, and decommissioning; interface control documentation; 1:1 mockups and test articles; test plans and acceptance criteria; readiness reviews with QA and Systems Engineering; design updates from demonstration feedback; planning and cost estimation; vendor manufacturability; risk and reliability assessments; nuclear regulation and code compliance); remote handling solutions (repair and replacement hardware, design-build-test cycles, full-scale mockups for reach, clearances, tooling alignment, ergonomics, and sequencing, online and offline maintenance strategies); testing and validation aligned to reactor and facility schedules; cross-disciplinary coordination; and engineering reports supporting design basis documentation and regulatory submittals, plus mentoring junior engineers.
Qualifications require a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with 8 or more years developing hardware for demanding applications and demonstrated full-scale prototype, integration, and demonstration experience; preferred backgrounds include remote-operation mechanical/electrical integration, nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other regulated industries, molten salt or advanced reactors, low-voltage and optical systems, servos and power electronics, ASME codes and piping standards, and LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python. The role is onsite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with hands-on laboratory and shop work, up to 25% travel, occasional extended hours, and the standard DOE 10 CFR Part 810 export-control authorization requirement.
