Role
Pacific Fusion is hiring a Controls Hardware Engineer to gather controls requirements from project teams and design significant parts of the main control system for its pulser-driven inertial fusion program. It suits a controls engineer who wants to grow in hardware design.
Responsibilities: Develop and validate control-system requirements with engineering teams, then translate functional and safety requirements into control logic, hardware specifications and test criteria. Design control architectures, electrical schematics, control panels and wiring diagrams for 24VDC control and 480VAC drive power systems, and specify PLC, HMI and communication hardware. Configure and commission VFDs, servo drives and motion control, write and test PLC programs, and implement safety interlock and process control logic. Produce I/O lists, control narratives and validation test procedures, and support fabrication, installation and operations teams.
Requirements: A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering or a related field and at least five years of industrial automation or control-system design experience. Candidates need proficiency with PLC-based systems, experience with VFDs, servo drives and motion control, and familiarity with 24VDC and 480VAC systems. A strong understanding of NFPA 70, 70E and 79 and IEC 61511 functional safety is required, along with industrial panel or cabinet design experience and a record of turning requirements into detailed design documentation.
Preferred experience: Safety PLCs and interlock logic design, work at large scientific facilities or other high-reliability environments, and CAD experience, with EPLAN singled out as a significant plus.
Working arrangements: The role may require access to ITAR- or EAR-controlled information, which the employer restricts to U.S. persons, including lawful permanent residents and asylees or refugees with granted, not pending, status.
