Mechanical Engineer - Pulsed Power

San Leandro, California, US · $130,000–$180,000 (base salary; offer varies with experience, skills and work location)

Role

Pacific Fusion is hiring a Mechanical Engineer - Pulsed Power to design, build, operate and advance the pulsed power systems at the core of its experimental fusion platform. The hands-on, multidisciplinary role spans high-voltage systems, controls, diagnostics and data analysis, with ownership of subsystem development.

Responsibilities: Design, build and operate high-voltage, high-current pulsed power architectures, including the control systems used for operation, safety and automation. Run the systems during testing and data acquisition campaigns, keeping high-energy operation within company safety protocols. Analyse experimental data and turn results into recommendations for next-generation pulser design. Lead design reviews, experiment planning and technical documentation while working with mechanical, electrical and plasma physics teams on the subsystem roadmap.

Requirements: A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics or a related field and at least two years of demonstrated experience designing complex systems. Candidates need experience designing, testing and building prototype mechanical/electrical systems, a record of delivering R&D projects from concept to validation, and a strong background in electronic design, control systems and PLC software. Circuit simulation with SPICE, PSCAD, COMSOL or similar tools, data analysis in Python, MATLAB or equivalent, and familiarity with CAD and modelling software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS or COMSOL Multiphysics are also expected.

Preferred experience: An M.S. or Ph.D. in a relevant field, high-voltage pulsed systems for fusion, plasma research or accelerators, integrating diagnostics and controls for high-energy experiments, and knowledge of high-voltage safety standards.

Working arrangements: Test campaigns include occasional work outside regular business hours. The role may require access to ITAR- or EAR-controlled information, which the employer restricts to U.S. persons, including lawful permanent residents and asylees or refugees with granted, not pending, status.
