Material Control and Accounting Specialist

Valar Atomics is hiring a Material Control and Accounting (MC&A) Specialist to lead the nuclear material safeguards program at its TRISO fuel manufacturing facilities, within the Fuels & Materials team. The specialist is responsible for the accurate accounting, control and protection of special nuclear material (SNM) in line with Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements.

Responsibilities: The role develops and maintains the MC&A Plan and procedures, oversees material measurements, physical inventories and transactions, manages material balance areas and reports to the Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System. It keeps the facility compliant with DOE orders 474.2 and 470.4B and supports IAEA Additional Protocol requirements where they apply. The specialist runs the tamper-indicating device and measurement control programs, performs limit-of-error inventory difference analysis, leads root-cause reviews of inventory differences or safeguards anomalies, conducts internal audits and prepares for inspections and assessments.

Requirements: Experience in nuclear material control and accounting or nuclear safeguards, and experience at a site handling special nuclear material, such as a commercial, DOE or NNSA facility or a national laboratory. Candidates need demonstrated knowledge of DOE orders 474.2 and 470.4B and the NRC regulations in 10 CFR 74, plus experience with MC&A software systems and database management.

Preferred experience: Destructive and non-destructive assay techniques; statistical analysis, measurement uncertainty and error propagation; knowledge of nuclear material types, forms and measurement methods; strong written and verbal communication; managing multiple priorities in a highly regulated setting; and integrating physical protection systems with MC&A.
