Role
Valar Atomics is hiring a Senior Nuclear Supplier Quality Engineer to serve as the nuclear quality assurance subject-matter expert in its Supplier Quality organization. The engineer owns supplier oversight for procurement of nuclear safety-related materials, components and services and plays a central role in the company's Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) program, which evaluates commercial-grade items for use in safety-significant applications.
Responsibilities: The role leads the supplier audit process from planning and scheduling through execution and reporting, and runs supplier qualification, including NQA-1 compliance assessment. Within CGD, it reviews and approves all CGD Plans from Procurement Engineering and is the primary technical contact for Commercial Grade Surveys at supplier sites. The engineer develops purchase-order quality and flow-down requirements, resolves complex supplier nonconformances, supports NRC, DOE, NNSA and customer audits, and mentors Supplier Quality Engineers.
Requirements: One of three routes qualifies: a bachelor's degree and five years of nuclear experience; graduation from US Navy Nuclear Propulsion School and three years of nuclear experience; or no degree and ten years of direct nuclear experience. Working knowledge of nuclear codes such as ASME, AWS and AISC, welding and NDE, and the applicable regulatory requirements is essential. Candidates must be able to travel 50–75% of the time, which may include weekends and extended trips.
Preferred experience: An advanced degree in nuclear, materials or mechanical engineering; NQA-1 lead auditor, ASQ CQA/CQE or equivalent certification; ownership of a full CGD program lifecycle; HTGR, SMR or microreactor supply chains, including TRISO fuel, graphite or refractory materials; regulator oversight interface; and ASME Section IX and NDE qualification requirements.
Working arrangements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
