Jobs / Xcimer Energy

Director of Fusion Nuclear Science

Denver, Colorado, US · $220,000–$260,000 a year

Role

Xcimer Energy is hiring a Director of Fusion Nuclear Science to lead the science behind its laser-driven inertial fusion power plant. The director owns the long-term roadmap for fusion chamber dynamics, blanket multi-physics, tritium science and related fields, and serves as the company's primary authority on fusion nuclear science.

Responsibilities: Build, staff and lead the Fusion Nuclear Science department. Set the strategy for modeling frameworks, experimental capabilities and validation infrastructure, and oversee analysis, code development and experiments, emphasizing reproducibility, uncertainty quantification and model credibility. Turn validated models and data into design guidance for engineering teams. Manage work with national laboratories, universities and vendors, identify scientific risks, and support root-cause reviews of failures or anomalies.

Requirements: A PhD in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, nuclear physics or a closely related field. At least 12 years of analysis, simulation, experimental R&D or technology development for complex nuclear or fusion systems in extreme thermal and radiation environments, plus at least 6 years leading multidisciplinary scientific or R&D organizations. Deep experience with nuclear analysis tools such as MCNP, multi-physics software such as COMSOL or ANSYS, and thermohydraulic codes such as RELAP or MELCOR. Candidates also need experience designing experiments that raise technology readiness, a record of growing technical teams and a strong publication record.

Preferred experience: Fusion chamber, blanket multi-physics or tritium fuel cycle work is valued, as is familiarity with fusion safety and regulation. Experience in commercial nuclear or fusion experimental facilities, tritium handling, molten salt technologies or fusion plant commercialization also helps.

Working arrangements: The role is onsite at the Denver headquarters. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as refugees or asylees.
