Xcimer Energy is hiring a Laser Physicist to design, build, modify and operate pulsed laser systems for its laser fusion research in Denver. The physicist improves system performance such as beam quality, supports optics engineers with beam alignment and diagnostics, and keeps lasers running reliably for experimental campaigns.
Responsibilities: Design, operate and maintain advanced pulsed laser systems, including realignment and fault diagnosis with vendors. Specify and source optical components based on damage threshold, transmission and beam quality. Plan and run spectroscopic experiments, calibrate laser characterization equipment and ensure data are free of artifacts. Write procedures and train technicians on basic maintenance and alignment, and give engineers technical guidance on laser design.
Requirements: A bachelor's degree with at least three years of experience, or a master's degree with one to two years of related laboratory experience. Candidates need advanced knowledge of solid-state and gas pulsed lasers and pulse characterization, experience with nonlinear frequency conversion, and experience specifying, budgeting, purchasing and operating lasers, detectors, optics and spectrometers. Independent troubleshooting, planning laser experiments and strong communication skills are expected.
Preferred experience: A PhD in electrical engineering, chemistry, physics or a related field. Useful specialties include optical spectroscopy and gas kinetics, laser gain dynamics, pulse and spectral shaping, Ti:Sapphire alignment, nanosecond and femtosecond pulse diagnostics, high-damage-threshold optics, vacuum systems, beamline construction, national laboratory experience, and Matlab, Python or LabVIEW.
Working arrangements: The role is onsite in Denver. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as refugees or asylees.
