Nuclear Decommissioning Tracker

Indian Point Energy Center (Units 1-3)

Active dismantling · United States · Immediate dismantling

Holtec Decommissioning International is dismantling all three Indian Point units on the Hudson River after buying the plant from Entergy in May 2021. All spent fuel was moved to dry casks by October 2023 and reactor vessel internals segmentation for Units 2 and 3 continued through late 2025; Holtec has publicly floated a possible restart.

Notable issueNew York State law bars Holtec from discharging radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River; Holtec has challenged it, and in September 2025 Holtec floated restarting the reactors.

Notes

target completion 2062 = license termination per Holtec PSDAR as summarized by NRC; Holtec has separately said it aims to clear the site (except fuel) by the mid-2030s (ExchangeMonitor reports a 2036 target). Cost $2.3bn and trust ~$2.1bn (Oct 2019) are from the NY AG's 2020 filing summarizing Holtec's PSDAR. Holtec's 2026 S-1 shows Holtec must keep at least $360m in the Indian Point NDT until partial site release.
