NRC Licensing Review Tracker

Every NRC licensing review NNN tracks, from application to decision: new reactor permits, design approvals, restarts, licence renewals, fuel-cycle and research-reactor licences. Each date links to its source. Review time runs from docketing, when the NRC accepts an application for review, to the decision, the NRC's own convention; the NRC's planned schedule sits beside it.

Questions

Questions

How does NNN measure an NRC review's length?
From the date the NRC docketed the application (accepted it for detailed technical review) to the decision: the permit, licence or approval issued, or the denial or withdrawal. Durations are in average Gregorian months (30.436875 days), rounded to one decimal, and are always derived from the sourced dates, never entered by hand.
What is the difference between submitted and docketed?
Submitted is when the NRC received the application, or its final part for phased submittals. The NRC then runs an acceptance review; docketing is the date it accepts the application as complete enough to review. The NRC measures its own review schedules from docketing, so NNN does too, and shows submitted-to-decision time on each review page.
Why can the NRC's planned schedule differ from the review time shown?
The planned schedule is the duration the NRC published when it set the review schedule, and the NRC-reported durations often run to the final safety evaluation rather than to the permit. Hearings, phased submittals, pauses requested by the applicant and environmental reviews also bend the clock; each review's notes say which applied.
Which reviews are included?
NRC reviews decided on or after 1 January 2019, the pre-ADVANCE Act baseline, plus reviews still open: new reactor permits and licences, design certifications and approvals, restarts, licence renewals, fuel-cycle and spent-fuel storage licences and amendments, and research reactor licences. The set is curated, not exhaustive: a review is added once its dates can be sourced, and routine amendments and research-reactor renewals are covered selectively. Withdrawn and denied applications keep their records.

Method & scope

One record per application. Dates come from NRC project pages, ADAMS letters and Federal Register notices; durations are derived from them, never estimated. A date no source states stays blank, with a note. The NRC's planned schedules, reported review durations and resource figures are quoted as the NRC published them, not recomputed.

Event logs are append-only: corrections are added as new entries, never rewrites. Withdrawn, denied and reverted reviews keep their records. Records marked low confidence rest on thin or conflicting sources. Durations are only comparable within a review type: a licence renewal and a construction permit are different reviews.
